As part of the global celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child 2020, Gray Network organized a community-wide awareness campaign in Ho Municipality. The initiative focused on promoting girl child education and raising awareness on the prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), which had risen sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Public Engagement Activities in key community spaces — Ho streets, lorry parks, and markets.
- Picketing on major streets to create visibility and mobilize support for girls’ education and SGBV prevention.
- Education sessions on the consequences of SGBV and its impact on individuals, families, and communities.
- Information sharing on reporting channels and referral pathways to ensure victims knew how and where to report cases.
- Open dialogues with market women, traders, transport operators, and youth groups to break the silence around SGBV.
- 2,000 parents sensitized with clear messages on the importance of girl child education and preventing/reporting SGBV.
- 1,000 young people (students and youth groups) reached with information on SGBV prevention and reporting.
- The public gained knowledge of reporting systems
- Public picketing and market/lorry station engagements created high visibility and sparked discussions across the municipality.
- Total Direct Reach: 3,000 people
- 2,000 parents & caregivers
- 1,000 young people
- Indirect Reach: Wider community members through bystander engagement during picketing, market/lorry station dialogues, and visibility actions.
The campaign addressed heightened risks for girls during COVID-19, including school dropouts, early marriage, and teenage pregnancy. It broke the silence on SGBV, promoted reporting, and mobilized parents, traders, and transport operators as advocates—showing how grassroots action can amplify girls’ voices and safeguard their education and rights.
