The Hidden Costs of Gender-Based Violence: From Health to Education

Gender-based violence (GBV) is not only a violation of human rights – it’s a chain reaction that affects every sector of society. Survivors face health complications, trauma, loss of opportunities, and stigma. Children who grow up in abusive environments often drop out of school, perpetuating cycles of poverty.

The cost to Ghana’s economy is also staggering. Studies show billions are lost annually in medical treatment, lost productivity, and legal processes linked to GBV.

Ending GBV requires a multi-level response. Communities must challenge harmful norms, schools should teach respect and consent, and policymakers need to fund prevention and survivor support programs.

GRAYNETWORK is committed to raising awareness, building safe spaces for survivors, and training young advocates to fight GBV. Because when one woman or girl is free from violence, the whole community benefits.
